5 Things You Should Probably Declutter From Your Wardrobe

In my latest YouTube Video, I talked about all the things I’ve been clearing out of my wardrobe. I very clearly struggled through this video, but not for the reasons you may think! Here are things you should probably declutter from your wardrobe. I promise it will free your mind and fashion soul.

Be careful!

Once you start, decluttering is going to be your newest pass time.

  1. Poorly Fitting and Old Underwear.

I had the privilege of working in the Lingerie Department at Nordstrom, and let me tell you, I was wearing the wrong size. Not only was I wearing the wrong size bra, I was convinced that something was wrong with me because of the pain I would have consistently in my chest. It turns out, I am not an A-Cup, and likely you aren’t either. Between that and trying nice, quality panties I cannot stand when things don’t fit correctly.

Easy things to tell if your bra fits correctly would be where the underwire hits. It should not touch your breast tissue but go under it. And I think there is something to understanding that being a D or DD isn’t actually massive at all. Another characteristic to note is the band size. Always start on the first set of hooks. Bras are designed to stretch, and the three closure hooks are there to help the bra last longer.

  2. Anything That No Longer Fits

I’m so guilty of keeping pieces in my closet for the next occasion, and let it sit in the back taking up space for years. There is something very stressful when I am trying to get ready in the morning, and I put on clothes and they are too tight, too short, or just simply have shrunken through the years. It’s not worth the stress and I’ve actually been able to evaluate my wardrobe better by making sure everything in it fits like it should.

  3. Styles You Have Outgrown

There is this top that I purchased over a decade ago and wore it all the time. It was long enough to be a top but also a dress, and I chose to style it constantly in new and refreshing ways. In my mid-twenties, I would have told you she was my most loved and favorite piece of clothing. Nowadays when I go to wear her, I genuinely do not feel the same love and excitement I once did. So, in my latest round of decluttering, I decided it was time to tell her thank you and let her go.

  4. Items You Only Have for A Former Job

This one is painful to write about, but such is life. When I was younger, I worked for a deli as an after school job. We had t-shirts that were given to us, and then were required to wear khaki pants and non-slip shoes. Tell me why I held on to those food stained t-shirts for at least a decade?!

Before I got really interested in capsule wardrobes, I worked at a jewelry store. The dress code was 36 pages long, and it was very strict around what you could wear with certain things. So, if you wore jeans a blazer was mandatory. Honestly, that may be why my love for blazers has dissipated. So, it has become important to me to really ask myself “Why do I own this? Does it still serve a purpose in my life?” If the answer is so that I could wear it to work, or no it doesn’t serve a purpose, it is time to let it go.

  5. Anything You Haven’t Worn in 1 Year.

This is hard to gauge, but also easy enough. I know the shirts and pants I reach for on repeat for the most part. But nowadays there are so many resources to help you figure out what things you actually wear, and what things just aren’t serving you and are taking up precious closet real estate.

A few of my favorite apps are Cladwell, Index, and then of course you could go through and make a spreadsheet. They are all a bit time consuming to use on the front end, but honestly, I love the option of have photos to see what I have and how it will work with other options in my closet.
